I have been interested in the Martial Arts and Occult Sciences and actually all forms of personal growth for as long as I can remember. Like many others before me as a small boy I was greatly influenced by Bruce Lee and his dynamic ability. Then from about the age of ten I immersed myself into reading (and practicing from pictures..lol) all I could about arts of the Ninja and seemed to find a home. Although at this time finding a school in this discipline wasn’t the easiest. But being lucky enough to have a supportive family that let me engage in any path I chose the road towards my dream was set.
I continued to read various Asian philosophy books after I finally started formal instruction in Tang Soo Do at age twelve. I received 1st Degree Black Belt through two organizations in November of 1992 with Dragon Karate and December of 1992 with American Martial Arts Academy (AMAA). I was assistant instructor for both of these schools since the rank of 6th kyu and gained much experience on all levels. I also began working with weapons such as the Sai, Bo, Kama, nunchucka and tonfa in that order. During this time I competed on many levels of competition from the state level and national level with much success. I continually placed in the top five in forms competition and soon gained victory in the sparring realm. I soon went on to kickboxing after feeling the need for more realism. I competed as and amateur with a record of two wins zero losses. I attribute much growth to my experiences in the competitive field but still was searching for completion as the spiritual side of the arts was rarely focused upon within these schools. During this time I was searching for more techniques to expand my arsenal and started to explore the art of Kenpo to complete my tools. I also studied, practiced and implemented JKD concepts and philosophy to make sure that I could truly defend myself in street situations.
After immersing myself in the physical side of martial arts such as TSD, JKD and Kenpo for so long my path got a little fuzzy. The original reasons I chose this lifestyle were missing. I went hermit like into a more intellectual study consisting of religion, witchcraft, magic, and all forms of the occult. After a very fruitful journey of growing up and self discovery I finally found a school teaching my original interests. (Quest Center/ To-ShinDo and the Bujinkan Arts).I studied for two years under a personal student of Anshu Stephen K. Hayes and had the chance to study with Mr. Hayes on three occasions. This was amazing as he is one of my childhood “idols” as well as an excellent teacher and martial artist. During this time I was enrolled in every program that the school offered such as Black Belt Club, Swat team, and instructors training. I began my study of Kenjutsu, stealth, and formal mind sciences as well. I found this experience to add greatly to the portions of combat and life I was lacking previously.
After my instructor left the school I chose a more nomadic path of the warrior with my new found wisdom and passion. I went on to gain under rank with the International Bujinkan Dojo Association and found this to be great way to learn some of the more classical aspects of feudal Japanese arts. But I continued to be disheartened a bit by the infighting within the “Ninja” arts and the political structure that these disciplines were displaying. At this time I did some research into finding one of my original inspirational authors of my youth Master Ashida Kim. I found him to be an excellent mentor as he personally answered my inquiries and questions of the Martial Arts and the “secrets” of the arts in general. Soon after I joined the Black Dragon Ninja Society founded by Master Kim gaining First Degree Black Belt and continued to study all I could and very much appreciate his fellowship. Master Kim’s teaching style very much influences me in the way he allows his students to “discover” for themselves what it is they are seeking. Also at this time I took many classes and courses that made up all of the aspects that I found valuable in the archetype of the Warrior Mystic including various spiritual paths, meditation arts, and holistic warrior arts.
Going full circle I chose to go back to the original arts that I studied to find the "true meaning" of these gaining rank in Kenpo, JuiJutsu, and various weapon skills. In all actuality I was searching for personal realization of truth and self-discovery which is the motto I live by. After this journey I registered with the Black Tigers International Ninja Society to recognize my rank with Master Kim and to re-dedicate myself to finding truth within my original motivation which is the archetype of the Ninja. I then took a few courses that were in the process of getting accreditation for Doctorate degrees but did not for whatever reason (Diplomas instead). Then choose to take various honorary degree classes and test from the ULC and other organizations. (Divinity, Metaphysics, and Ph.D.) I also have been ordained by the ULC and World Reiki Ministry. I must be said that I use these various "titles" as catalyst for growth and understanding. In no way do I know it all. I just want the most of this current life experience on all levels mental, spiritual, and physical.
After a time period of developing a truly discerning mind when it comes to all of these experiences I feel that I have the sincere confidence and peace of mind that I originally sought. I now belong to the Ninjutsu International Federation as a Shinobi member with hopes that unity can be found within practitioners of these arts. After celebrating twenty years in the arts, I combined all my experiences into my family systems of the Makoto Kinjo Ryu Budo and Makoto Shiki Ryoho (martial arts and the spiritual arts) by gaining 4th Degree Rank certification through the International Combat Martial Science Union Association in 2005. I went onto receive Sokeship through several organizations recogonizing my system and credentials. Since then I have been tested and trained in several other arts. The best part about it is that I see my life as just beginning! I love the universe I have created and hope to inspire all I encounter to reach their highest potential! I enjoy the opportunity to teach, discuss, and share things of this nature. It is great to have brothers and sisters on the path of the arts in all there manifestations!
